A ship sails across the Taiwan Strait, broadcasting its position to the world every few seconds. Then, at some moment, the signal cuts out — it vanishes from every shipping-tracker website.

But it has not really vanished. 600 km overhead, a radar satellite still sees it clearly. That is a "dark vessel."

What Is a Dark Vessel?

A "dark vessel" is a ship that is detected by satellite radar but has no matching AIS signal. Its hull is genuinely on the water and visible to radar, yet it is "invisible" on the AIS-based tracking platforms most people use.

AIS (Automatic Identification System) is the radio signal large ships are required to broadcast, carrying name, position, speed, and course. When a vessel switches off AIS, the industry calls it "going dark." Once dark, it becomes invisible in the AIS world — but in the physical world it is still a large piece of metal moving across the sea surface.

How Are Dark Vessels Detected?

The trick is to overlay two completely different ways of "seeing" a ship:

Switching Off AIS Doesn't Make a Ship Disappear

This is the most common misconception about dark vessels. Many assume that "if a ship drops off the tracker, it has left the area." It hasn't.

AIS is only a voluntary radio transponder. Switching it off is like powering down a phone: you can no longer reach that person, but they have not vanished from the planet. The ship is still sailing where it was, can still snag a submarine cable, and can still rendezvous with another vessel on the high seas.

Why this matters: precisely because going dark does not actually remove the ship, independent satellite detection (SAR) becomes decisive — it turns the act of "going dark" itself into visible, recordable evidence rather than a blank gap.

The Role of SAR Satellites and Global Fishing Watch

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an active radar satellite. It emits its own microwaves and reads the echoes bouncing back from land and sea, so it does not depend on sunlight and can see through clouds — imaging by day, by night, and in rain. Metal hulls return especially strong echoes and appear as bright spots in SAR imagery.

The SAR dark-vessel detections used here come from Global Fishing Watch. They process SAR imagery from satellites such as the European Space Agency's Sentinel-1, automatically identify vessel bright-spots on the sea surface, compare them against public AIS data, and flag the targets with no AIS match. This site pulls those results every 12 hours and overlays them on a map of the waters around Taiwan.

Why SAR Is Hard to Fool AIS can be switched off or spoofed; SAR measures a physical echo directly from space. The only way for a ship to avoid being seen by SAR is to not be on the water surface at all — impossible for a vessel actually carrying out a mission.

Taiwan is an island whose internet, finance, and communications depend almost entirely on submarine cables. If a key cable is severed, the impact is not just slower browsing — it is the resilience of an entire society.

Across several recent cable-damage incidents, one alarming pattern keeps recurring: the vessels involved switch off AIS before approaching the cable, so they cannot be tracked or intercepted in real time while the damage occurs. This is the core value of dark-vessel monitoring — taking the deliberately concealed act of "going dark" and putting it back in plain sight.

How This Project Reads Dark Vessels

This site does not treat "dark vessel" as a synonym for "bad ship." We treat a dark vessel as a starting point, then apply a transparent set of rules to judge how risky it is:

  1. Obtain SAR detections from Global Fishing Watch and mark dark vessels with no AIS match.
  2. Overlay them against known AIS tracks, submarine cable routes, fishing hotspots, and territorial baselines.
  3. Check behavioral features: within 5 km of a cable, loitering at low speed, zigzag course, a history of going dark or changing identity.
  4. Accumulate a threat score across 8 criteria, weighted by vessel type (cargo and tanker weigh more; fishing less).
  5. Vessels reaching the threshold are flagged "suspicious" and listed for further human assessment.

Data Limitations & Disclaimer

  • A SAR detection means a "radar-visible target" and does not by itself indicate illegal activity; it may be a lawful merchant ship, fishing vessel, or government vessel.
  • Switching off AIS is lawful in some situations (e.g. safety in piracy areas); going dark is not itself a violation.
  • SAR satellites image only as they pass over, leaving spatial and temporal gaps; no detection does not mean no ship was present.
  • AIS data can be incomplete due to relay delay, coverage gaps, or equipment issues, affecting the "match / no match" determination.
