暗船(dark vessel)是關閉 AIS、卻仍被合成孔徑雷達(SAR)衛星偵測到的船。 關閉 AIS 不代表船消失——SAR 仍能在黑暗與雲層中拍到金屬船體。將 SAR 偵測與 AIS 交叉比對, 「有雷達、沒 AIS」的目標即為暗船。暗船是值得研判的線索,並非違法認定。
A dark vessel is a ship that has switched off its AIS transponder yet is still detected by Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites. Going dark does not make a vessel disappear — SAR still sees the metal hull through darkness and cloud. Cross-referencing SAR detections with AIS, a "radar yes, AIS no" target is a dark vessel. It is a lead to investigate, not a legal finding.
「暗船」(dark vessel)指的是被衛星雷達偵測到、卻沒有對應 AIS 訊號的船隻。它的船體確實在海面上、被雷達拍到,但在一般依賴 AIS 的追蹤平台上卻「看不見」。
AIS(自動識別系統)是大型船舶依規定主動廣播的無線電訊號,包含船名、位置、速度與航向。當一艘船關閉 AIS,業界稱為「走暗」(going dark)。走暗之後,它就成了 AIS 世界裡的隱形人——但物理世界裡,它仍是一塊在水面移動的大型金屬。
A "dark vessel" is a ship that is detected by satellite radar but has no matching AIS signal. Its hull is genuinely on the water and visible to radar, yet it is "invisible" on the AIS-based tracking platforms most people use.
AIS (Automatic Identification System) is the radio signal large ships are required to broadcast, carrying name, position, speed, and course. When a vessel switches off AIS, the industry calls it "going dark." Once dark, it becomes invisible in the AIS world — but in the physical world it is still a large piece of metal moving across the sea surface.

This is the most common misconception about dark vessels. Many assume that "if a ship drops off the tracker, it has left the area." It hasn't.
AIS is only a voluntary radio transponder. Switching it off is like powering down a phone: you can no longer reach that person, but they have not vanished from the planet. The ship is still sailing where it was, can still snag a submarine cable, and can still rendezvous with another vessel on the high seas.

本站使用的 SAR 暗船偵測結果來自 Global Fishing Watch(全球漁業觀察)。他們處理歐洲太空總署 Sentinel-1 等 SAR 衛星影像,自動辨識海面上的船舶亮點,再與公開 AIS 資料比對,標出沒有 AIS 匹配的目標。本站每 12 小時擷取一次這些結果,疊加到台灣周邊海域地圖上。
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an active radar satellite. It emits its own microwaves and reads the echoes bouncing back from land and sea, so it does not depend on sunlight and can see through clouds — imaging by day, by night, and in rain. Metal hulls return especially strong echoes and appear as bright spots in SAR imagery.
The SAR dark-vessel detections used here come from Global Fishing Watch. They process SAR imagery from satellites such as the European Space Agency's Sentinel-1, automatically identify vessel bright-spots on the sea surface, compare them against public AIS data, and flag the targets with no AIS match. This site pulls those results every 12 hours and overlays them on a map of the waters around Taiwan.

Across several recent cable-damage incidents, one alarming pattern keeps recurring: the vessels involved switch off AIS before approaching the cable, so they cannot be tracked or intercepted in real time while the damage occurs. This is the core value of dark-vessel monitoring — taking the deliberately concealed act of "going dark" and putting it back in plain sight.
